More than 120000 flee Bali volcano

Indonesia Bali Volcano

Almost 50,000 people have fled the Mount Agung volcano on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali, fearing an imminent eruption as dozens of tremors rattle the surrounding region, officials said Monday.

The Indonesian disaster agency's 134,200 figure is more than double the population of the 12km exclusion zone around the mountain, but people from further afield are leaving too.

A week after authorities put Bali's volcano on high alert, tremors that indicate an eruption is coming show no sign of abating, swelling the exodus from the region to at least 140,000 people.

It last erupted in 1963, spewing ash, gas, rock and miles of lava, killing more than 1,100 people and destroying numerous homes.

The people who have fled the volcano are scattered across Bali in more than 400 different locations including temporary camps, sports centres and other public buildings. "This ensures that if an eruption occurs while the aircraft is en route, we will be able to get guests back to their originating port safely and quickly", it said in a travel alert. "So I chose to get out to save myself with my stuff and my pet", he said, carrying a bird in a cage.

Indonesia Bali Volcano

Bali is famous for its beaches and temples and saw almost 5 million visitors previous year, mainly from China, Australia, and Japan.

Bali's tourism department on Thursday issued a letter reassuring travelers, and noting that flights were operating normally.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of villagers living within a high danger zone that in places extends 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from Mount Agung's crater.

The airline says the precautionary measure could mean delays for some passengers, but its Bali services are now operating on scheduled. (AP) Authorities are also preparing ferries to help people leave Bali in case air travel is disrupted, Karya said. Since then, tens of thousands of villagers have been urged to abandon their homes beneath the menacing volcano. About a third, or 10,000 cows, have either been sold by those fleeing or taken with them.

An elderly woman who survived that eruption said evacuation instructions had come much earlier this time.
