Saudi Arabia Allows Women To Drive, Backs Down On Long-Standing Ban

Yemen's Hadi sees only a military solution to crisis-Arabiya TV

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday announced that it would allow women to drive, state media reported. We have dynamic leadership. The campaign fizzled after some women were jailed for driving.

The latest decree highlights how Saudi tries to reform its reputation that was damaged for not allowing the women to drive in public.

King Salman and his young son and heir, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, have tested the waters though, allowing women into the country's main stadium in the capital, Riyadh, for national day celebrations this month.

Many Saudi women rely on ride-sharing apps like Uber and Careem to take relish some freedom of movement.

This follows many years of work by activists in Saudi Arabia to draw global attention to the restrictions, including driving despite the ban as an act of civil disobedience.

However, the change will not be implemented immediately as the kingdom has no infrastructure for women to learn to drive or obtain drivers licenses.

The committee has 30 days to provide its recommendations, the decree said, so that the new policy can be carried out starting on June 24.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters that the department was pleased with the announcement and that lifting the ban is a good sign. In recent years it became seen as a human rights violation, as women began to get behind the wheel as a form of protest. She did not comment on whether Saudi Arabia still needs to do more to ensure full rights for its female citizens.
