Three Lions CAN wear poppies on shirts against Germany

Poppies on England shirts

FIFA has reportedly sent a proposal to its football associations that would revise provisions that banned the use of the poppy symbol on the jerseys of British teams.

Not before time, Federation Internationale de Football Association is set to back down and lift its ban on British national teams displaying the poppy symbols on shirts and armbands to honour the war dead of World War 1 and all conflicts since.

FIFA's stance resulted in widespread condemnation in Britain, with Prime Minister Theresa May calling it "utterly outrageous".

Supporters reacted with fury previous year when Fifa - football's global governing body - fined the FA after England and Scotland players wore black armbands with a poppy for their World Cup qualifier at Wembley on November 11.

England is planning to play Germany in a friendly at Wembley around Armistice Day, assuming Gareth Southgate's side doesn't have to contest a playoff to qualify for the World Cup.

"It is completely right that footballers and fans alike should be able to wear poppies with pride, as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of our servicemen and women".

The International Football Association Board has reportedly made a decision to lift a ban on international players displaying poppies.

Once the new rules are agreed, players will be allowed to wear poppies on the pitch, but only on the conditions that the opposing team agrees and the competition organiser has no objection.

The players wore the poppy on a black armband during a World Cup qualifier match at Wembley last November.

Meanwhile, Wales and Northern Ireland were fined for displaying the emblem at their stadiums, the BBC reported.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Charles Sale says that Fifa has "come to its senses" over the poppy dispute, while The Times says it's a "significant victory" for the English Football Association.

"These clarifications do not require any further ratification, as they have been approved by The IFAB's Board of Directors (body authorised to approve such clarifications, which are not Law changes)".
