Oscar-nominated Rajkummar Rao's Newton gets leaked online

On the road to the Oscars

The Times of India reports that CV Reddy, Telugu film producer and chairman of jury that selected Newton as the Oscars entry, confirmed the news by saying, "The amount is being given to encourage good and meaningful cinema". "It's a great honour for us to represent India at the Oscars".

Directed by Amit V Masurkar, the film opened today to critical acclaim particularly of the performance of Rakumar and co-star Pankaj Tripathi.

"It feels fantastic and brilliant that a film like "Newton", which is unique and special for all of us, and which we have made with so much honesty and purity, without keeping any of those commercial thing in mind about what works and what sells, gets this. We're hoping that Newton gets an audience", he says, adding that he is keeping his feet firmly on the ground. "And they could feel the sincerity and purity of the film".

Newton revolves around an idealistic government clerk, Newton Kumar, deputed on election duty to a polling station located in the Naxal-infested town of strife-ridden Chhattisgarh jungles.

Only three Indian films - "Mother India" (1957), "Salaam Bombay!' (1988) and 'Lagaan" (2001) - have been nominated for Best Foreign Language film.

It focuses on the life of a ballot officer who visits a barren and desolate place to plead with voters to cast their votes and take part in the elections.

The film is garnering compliments in social media. However, with a content-driven film like Newton holding credibility for the top prize, this should come as a paradigm shift in the industry. "An eye opener. on many aspects.!"

'So layered and so amusing. The kind of response we are getting for the film in India is so good and now, an Oscar submission, it's huge.

Mehboob Khan's Mother India (1957), Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay!

Recent official entries have included Liar's Dice (2014), Court (2015), and the Tamil film Visaranai (2016).
