Foreigners killed in Mexico quake from Taiwan, Korea, Spain

5.8-magnitude tremor strikes Mexico

On Tuesday, a 7.1-magnitude natural disaster struck the region, killing more than 295 and dealing extensive damage to the capital Mexico City.

Oaxaca rests roughly between the center of the 7.1-magnitude temblor that hit near Mexico City on Tuesday and killed at least 298 people, and the more powerful 8.1-magnitude quake that struck the southern Pacific coast on September 7.

Rescue operations in Mexico City following the September 19 quake have been temporarily suspended while a risk assessment is carried out, according to the National Coordinator of the Civil Protection Authority, Luis Felipe Puente.

Mexico City did not immediately appear to sustain significant damage in Saturday's quake, the country's office of the secretary of public security said.

Buildings swayed in Mexico City, where nerves are still raw from Tuesday's magnitude 7.1 temblor that has killed at least 305 across the region. More than half the known dead —167 — perished in the capital.

For Patricia Fernandez Romero, who spent the morning on a yellow folding stool under a handwritten list with the names of the 46 missing, it was remembering how badly her 27-year-old son, Ivan Colin Fernandez, sang and realizing how much she wanted to hear him again. "And there are moments when you're a little calmer. They are all moments that you wouldn't wish on anyone".

They were told that water and food had been passed along to at least some of those trapped inside.

It's the moments between those bits of information that torment the families.

"They have told us it is well constructed, that it's a bunker", Bueno said of her own home. Forty-nine-year-old Jesus Gonzalez fell from a third-story balcony of a building where he was working when Tuesday's magnitude 7.1 quake hit, and he's awaiting surgery. "I want them to get out", Mr. Gutierrez said, his voice breaking.

In the stylish Condesa neighborhood, young revelers typically spill out from dimly lit bars and restaurants on a Friday night. Hope is fading that more survivors can be rescued from the rubble. Metal gates shuttered others. The few Condesa residents who ventured out Friday night said they were anxious for relief from an anguishing week.

"They keep telling us there is life in there, but we keep on waiting", Estrada said.
