Congolese Security Forces Kill at Least 18 Burundian Refugees

Refugees From Burundi Killed in Congo, Activists Say

More than 100 victims were injured during the confrontations at Kamanyola in the unsafe eastern DRC.

Lt. John Mwanamboka said the refugees were killed in Kamanyola area in South Kivu province's Walungu territory after they allegedly rioted and the Congolese army made an attempt to control the situation. A total of 43,769 Burundian refugees live in DRC.

Congo's government says it is opening an investigation to establish the facts and true identity of the "supposed refugees", spokesman Lambert Mende said.

"The incident provoked a reaction from the soldiers, who started shooting everywhere", he said.

Kamanyola hosts between 2 000 and 2 500 Burundian refugees and asylum seekers who are living with the local population since the upsurge of the crisis in Burundi in 2015.

Interior minister Josue Boji said that troops tried to disperse the refugees, who were fleeing violence and unrest in their own country, when the group started to throw stones.

Of the people killed in Friday's clashes, 15 were women, the commander of the Pakistani battalion of the United Nations peacekeeping mission, Waquara Yunusi, told The Associated Press.

Residents said the killings occurred after some Burundian refugees went to the bureau of intelligence in Kamanyola to inquire about four detained refugees.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said it was shocked and saddened over the violent deaths.

"So far, we have counted 31 dead and at least 105 injured, 15 of them seriously", the refugee said.
