California legislature passes bill to become sanctuary state

After long negotiations Gov. Jerry Brown and state Senate leader Kevin de León came to a compromise on the

The bill forbids local and state law enforcement officers from carrying out practices such as asking about someone's immigration status, handing a person over to federal immigration authorities if there's no warrant or establishment of probable cause and disclosing personal information about someone if it isn't already public information, according to the most recent bill analysis.

The original proposal by Democratic state senator Kevin De Leon would have also prohibited state and local police from reporting undocumented immigrants to federal authorities unless they had committed violent or serious crimes. Their approval would send it to Gov.

The Republican minority in the Legislature opposed the bill. Many, they said, have been afraid to go to school or to take their sick children to the hospital since President Donald Trump - who promised widespread deportations as part of a crackdown on illegal immigration - has been president.

The Assembly's 49-25 vote sets up a vote in the Senate later Friday.

The measure that passed still allows jail and prison officials to notify the federal government if they have arrested an undocumented immigrant with a felony record, and allows federal immigration officers to interview people in custody.

The changes did not mollify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Thomas Homan, who said the bill will deliberately destruct immigration laws and shelter criminals.

California Democrats approved a "sanctuary state" bill Saturday that would limit how local and state police can interact with federal immigration agents.

In an emotional debate that brought lawmakers on both sides to tears, supporters said the law is needed now more than ever.

"This is a measure that reflects the values of who we are as a great state", he said, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Sheriffs' Association is still against the bill. Under the additions to the bill, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation would have to develop new standards to protect people held on immigration violations, and to allow immigrant inmates to receive credits toward their sentences serviced if they undergo rehabilitation and educational programs while incarcerated. The Trump administration is playing politics with public safety.
