Frankfurt - Volkswagen T-Roc kicks off brand renewal

Experience 360 degrees of Magna at IAA Frankfurt

The world's largest vehicle maker by sales plans to invest a total of 20 billion euros (24 billion US dollars) until 2030 in electric mobility and even 50 billion euros in batteries.

The Volkswagen Group is planning to make fully electric and plug-in hybrid variants of all 300 of its models by 2030.

The news comes as Mercedes-Benz also promised electric versions of its entire range, with chief Dieter Zetsche declaring the company would deliver either electric or hybrid versions of all its models by 2022.

By 2025, Volkswagen plans to offer 80 new electric vehicles across its group and sub-brands, which include Audi, Bentley, Bugatti and the Volkswagen brand itself.

Volkswagen AG CEO Matthias Mueller said in Frankfurt that "the big question that everyone is asking is, 'When will we see (electric cars) in mass volume?'"

Muller said the electrification programme would ensure the company will "lead the way into the future", adding that "in the automotive world, 2030 is basically the day after tomorrow".

Volkswagen shows off a concept of its electric ID Crozz vehicle.

"We need to improve profits considerably in the USA", he said, as the automaker prepares for "the next phase" of electric, connected and autonomous vehicles.

The company will spend $50 billion will be invested in battery production in order to support its ambitions to create a vast range of electric vehicles.

Volkswagen has no plans to ditch diesel engines and isn't anxious about the rising threat of Tesla. CROZZ concept vehicle first unveiled in Shanghai this past spring.

It estimates that around 25 percent of its new vehicles - up to 3 million a year depending on market developments - could be purely battery-powered in 2025.

It's a decision that forms part of a much larger trend pushed both by governments as they look to reduce the air pollution in cities, and auto companies that realise customers are looking for cleaner, more efficient vehicles.

Carmakers at the Frankfurt auto show revealed low-emissions vehicles and technology strategies they hope will let them profit from the sweeping changes expected to hit the auto industry in the next few years.

Volkswagen said its new investments would set the scene for "e-mobility's final breakthrough".
