At Least 6 Dead At Florida Nursing Home Without Power After Irma

A lake is hit by Hurricane Irma in Pembroke Pines Florida

Hollywood Fire Rescue and police told WSVN on Wednesday a total of 120 people were evacuated at The Rehabilitation Center in Hollywood Hills due to intense heat and no power.

Five patients have died after their Florida care home lost power during Hurricane Irma, according to authorities.

Three people died at the facility in Hollywood, Florida, and three others were pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, said officials in the city between Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

"I am going to aggressively demand answers on how this tragic event took place", Scott said in a statement. "Communication is lacking in many portions of Monroe County". The Florida Health Care Association, an industry group for long-term care, released a statement emphasizing the strain Hurricane Irma has put on nursing homes and care centers.

The governor said he has ordered a probe by state authorities.

The deaths are under investigation.

Across Florida and nearby states, some 5 million homes and businesses were without power on Wednesday, down from a peak of 7.8 million on Monday. In both instances, the nursing home corrected these deficiencies. They did not elaborate on what those conditions were. The nursing home's maintenance director could not produce documentation to show that either the emergency generator "had been replaced" or that there were plans for a "permanent generator" to be installed, inspector records showed.

"Most of the patients have been treated for respiratory distress, dehydration and heat-related issues", Dr.

MIAMI/SAN JUAN, P.R., Sept 13 (Reuters) - Evacuees from Hurricane Irma returned early Wednesday to parts of the Florida Keys, which remained largely without electricity and communications in the wake of the deadly storm.

Generators can also come with their own health risks after three people were found dead inside an Orlando home Tuesday from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning.

"Approximately 150 facilities out of the almost 700 (nursing) facilities in the state do not now have full power services restored", the statement said.

The number of deaths blamed on Irma in Florida climbed to 13 with the carbon monoxide deaths, in addition to four in SC and two in Georgia.

At a news conference, Florida Power and Light said it serviced portions of the facility. She said her 58-year-old sister, who can't talk or walk, has been there 10 years. "Protecting the lives of Floridians is my top priority and that's why we have worked all week to help Floridians prepare and respond to Hurricane Irma", Scott said.
