About 6.1 million without power in US Southeast after Irma: utilities

To recover restoration costs, FPL files with state regulators and, if approved, adds a storm surcharge on the monthly bills of its almost 5 million customers. A unit of NextEra Energy Inc and the state's biggest power company, FPL said its outages dipped to around 2.8 million by Tuesday morning from a peak of over 3.6 million Monday morning.

Irma hit southwestern Florida on Sunday morning as a Category 4 storm, the second most severe on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale. That was down from a peak over 1.4 million on Monday night.

"Parts of the facility itself were energized by FPL, I can't give you anything more specific than that at this point", FPL spokesman Rob Gould told a news conference.

Georgia reported more than 570,000 homes and businesses without electricity, and there were 80,000 in SC.

Florida outages for Duke, the state's second biggest power company serving the northern and central parts of the state, remained at about 1.2 million overnight, according to the company's website, while Duke's outages in North and SC climbed to about 160,000.

Large utilities that serve other parts of the state, including units of Duke Energy Corp, Southern Co and Emera Inc have had scattered outages.

The utilities had thousands of workers - some from as far away as California - ready to help restore power once Irma's high winds pass their service areas. The nuclear plants are located along Florida's Atlantic Coast, about 20 feet above sea level.

In a worst case scenario, the spent fuel in the pool could release radiation if exposed to the air, but a federal nuclear official said that was extremely unlikely.
