Hurricane Jose still a potential threat to Florida after Hurricane Irma

Garrett’s Blog The Boomerang Hurricane Jose

"We should not take too much comfort, or indulge in too much angst, over a particular set of model runs".

Looping hurricanes have happened before, including Hurricane Jeanne, which in 2004 appeared to be heading out to the open Atlantic only to turn around and strike the Florida coast.

Powerful Hurricane Jose missed the Leeward Islands this weekend, but it might have a second chance to strike the Caribbean and possibly Florida, forecasters said.

Current long-term forecast models for Jose are all over the map next week.

Hurricane Jose was 700 miles east of Florida at midday Tuesday, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, making it a Category 1 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.

Unable to move to the north, and restricted from moving to the east by a developing upper level high pressure, Jose should have no choice but to meander for a few days in between Bermuda and the Southeast U.S. It will initially move farther away from the United States before coming closer to the Bahamas and East Coast.

- GFS, the American forecast model, and the ECMWF, the European one - keep Jose over the ocean. As of Tuesday morning, Jose was a low-end Category 1, and could weaken further into a tropical storm.

Have a family discussion about what you will do, where you will go and how you will communicate with each other when a storm threatens. It's now a tropical storm in Georgia, and is predicted to decrease to a tropical depression by early Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Before this hurricane season, the United States had gone a record 12 years without a major hurricane landfall.

The full hurricane season lasts until November 30, although the peak season generally stretches from about mid-August to mid-October.

While hurricanes doing clockwise loops are rare, they are not unheard of.
