J&K 2 terrorists killed in Kulgam encounter

Two militants have been killed in an operation by security forces in Rudwani area of Kulgam in south Kashmir.

Two terrorists allegedly belonging to the Hizbul Mujahideen were gunned down in Khudwani in Kashmir's Kulgam district after an intense gunfight between security forces and militants broke out in the early hours of today.

Two weapons were also recovered - one AK47 and one INSAS rifle.

An over-ground worker (OGW) was arrested during the operation, said an official. The arrested OGW was identfied as Arif Sofi of Kulgam, sources said.

Later at a press meet, Army, J&K Police and CRPF made a joint appeal to militants to surrender, announcing that officers who would motivate militants to drop arms would be rewarded. "The fire was retaliated and during the ensuing encounter, both the terrorists were neutralised", police spokesperson Manoj Pandita said in the statement. On Sunday had two local Hizbul militants were killed in an overnight encounter in neighbouring Shopian district.

The slain militants were reportedly identified as Sayar Ahmad Wani and Dawood Illahi Khan.

More than 140 militants have been killed so far this year in the restive Kashmir valley, where India has deployed thousands of additional troops to hunt for anti-India militants in an offensive dubbed "Operation Allout".
