Google has appealed a $2.4 billion fine from the EU

Google has appealed a record $2.7 billion fine from the European Union over its comparative shopping service, the EU Court of Justice announced Monday.

In an interview with AFP, Europe's anti-trust chief Margrethe Vestager last week said some of that proposal "pointed in the very right direction", but could only be judged once in effect.

Last week, EU officials said a plan that Google recently filed to comply with European regulations appeared to be a step "in the right direction".

"The Commission's decision stands on firm ground, both legally and factually, and we expect the Commission to win on appeal", FairSearch lawyer Thomas Vinje said.

At the time of the ruling, the tech giant had said it "respectfully" disagreed with the findings and would consider an appeal.

The EU's competition commission had ruled that Google abused its dominant position to favor its own shopping comparison service in internet searches, ordering the company to stop the practice by September 28.

It took Intel the best part of eight years to obtain Wednesday's judgement, and the case isn't over yet, so Google is likely have a long legal battle ahead of it.

Google has chose to appeal the record-breaking fine imposed on it by the European Union's highest antitrust authority in July.

Brussels had accused Google of giving more preference to its own services in the search results to the determinant of other price comparison sites, such as TripAdvisor and Expedia.

The EU is also expected to soon decide another case against Google over abusing its dominance of internet search to impose its Android mobile operating system.
