Hingis and Murray win US Open mixed doubles title

Hingis Chan capture US Open women's doubles crown

Trailing 8-7 late in the tiebreaker, the top seeds won the last three points to claim the mixed doubles title.

Sloane Stephens, of the United States, returns a shot from Madison Keys, of the United States, during the women's singles final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, in NY.

Stephens outlasted Venus Williams in her semifinal match on Thursday, while Keys routed a fourth American, CoCo Vandeweghe.

Seeking to become the first Kiwi to win a mixed doubles title at one of the year's four big tournaments, he lost a thriller in the final of the US Open in NY.

After winning the mixed doubles title with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 victory over New Zealand's Michael Venus and Chan's younger sister, Hao-Ching, Hingis was asked whether the partnership with Murray would continue into next year.

The pair also won Wimbledon together earlier this season.

Hingis had the chance to add her 25th major title yesterday when she was due to partner Taiwan's Chan Yung-jan in the women's doubles final, where they were due to take on Czech duo Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova.

Twenty years after winning the US Open singles title, Hingis earned her 24th Grand Slam title, including a fifth at Flushing Meadows.

Hingis, who reached No. 1 in the rankings and won five Grand Slam singles titles in the 1990s, initially quit tennis in 2002 because of foot and leg injuries, then rejoined the circuit full-time in 2006.

Martina Hingis, of Switzerland, left, returns a shot as doubles partner Chan Yung-Jan, of Taiwan, looks on during the doubles semifinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament against Sania Mirza, of India, and Peng Shuai, of China, Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, in NY.

She returned to the tennis tour in recent years as a coach before starting to play again.
