Additional Nuclear Inspectors Sent to Florida Power Plants in Hurricane Irma's Path

Bayardo Perez prepares to dismantle the mangled tin roof of his shed in Sweetwater Fla. Monday Sept. 11

"Based on Hurricane Irma's current track, we expect all of our Florida service area to feel the effects of this powerful storm", Luis Ordaz, storm director for Duke Energy Florida, said Saturday.

The number of homes and businesses without power in Florida as Hurricane Irma pummels the southern part of the state approached 600,000 Sunday morning.

FPL said Sunday that it had gone ahead with a partial shutdown of one of its nuclear power plants, but that the other continued to be fully operational and remained safe.

As of Sunday afternoon, about 1.5 million customers were without power.

The same applied to the utility's nuclear plant in Jensen Beach. Palm Beach County had more than 40,000 outages. More than 200,000 had electricity restored mostly by automated devices. It could become a Category 5 at any time.

Gould said FPL might have to turn off some substations ahead of any major flooding, a technique that could help the company restore power faster once any floodwaters recede, rather than keeping them on and allowing the storm to damage them. So far, that's about 1,000 more crew assembled for Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

FPL also said it will proactively shut down certain substations before they flood, so they can turn them back online more quickly.

FPL's two nuclear plants, Turkey Point and St. Lucie, will be closed on a gradual scale in advance of the onset of winds.

But after the storm has ended, FPL asks customers to report their outages, just in case there's some damage that is affecting the location.
