Anderson versus Carreño Busta: Who wins the service game?

South African Kevin Anderson defeats Pablo Carreno Busta to reach record US Open final

Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain and Kevin Anderson of South Africa have started play in the first U.S. Open men's semifinal.

Anderson, 31, will contest his maiden major final against top seed and 15-time slam champion Rafael Nadal following Friday's 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 win over 12th seed Carreno Busta at Flushing Meadows.

In the female category, Sloane Stephens, who became the first American woman besides the Williams sisters to reach the US Open semifinals since 2004 defeated Venus Williams 6-1 0-6 7-5 in the semi-final on Thursday, to make her first Grand Slam final.

The 28th seed recovered from a slow start to become the first South African player in a grand slam since Kevin Curren in 1984 and the first in NY since Cliff Drysdale in 1965.

He will face world number one Rafael Nadal or 24th seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina in Sunday's final. It was the first time when Anderson's game was stretched to four sets but the Italian failed to stop Anderson's stunning run at the US Open, losing by 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 4-6. A bullet-like backhand victor sealed the second set for the South African, leveling the match at one set all.

It was now the South African making all the running, earning six break points in the third set.

Two games later Anderson saved a pair of set points, but a third was quickly snatched up by Carreno Busta as a serve out wide was returned into the net. Held on for the set 6-3.

"One of the things I have probably spent the most time on is just keeping my body healthy".

"Rafa just play even better the last three sets of the match, and I couldn't hit my backhand as good as I did in the beginning of the match", said Del Potro. "It was very frustrating, because there were a couple that definitely forced me away from the tour but there were a few that were constantly nagging injuries and constantly not allowing me to play the tennis I needed to be playing".

Anderson, born in Johannesburg in May 1986, had never gone beyond the fourth round in more than a dozen appearances at Grand Slam events.

"I really don't know what to say right now", Anderson said in his ESPN on-court interview. "I've put in a lot of work, so it feels good to reach a milestone I haven't before".

With another inspiring march picking up steam with a fourth round win over sixth seed Dominic Thiem and a quarter-final upset of Federer, Nadal derailed the Del Potro train turning his dream into a nightmare.

Anderson improved to 3-0 against Carreno Busta, but he hasn't had any success against either Nadal or del Potro.

He was broken in the ninth game of the first set and trailed off the bat. That said, fatigue could be a factor for Anderson after his last match against Querrey. Carreno Busta has been serving very well so far this tournament.
