South Korea: Deployment of THAAD missile defense system completed

Saturday is the 69th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and neighboring countries are bracing for the rogue country to celebrate in a classic North Korean way: by conducting a test of its nuclear and missile program.

The US President reportedly issued the order to his top military generals last month after North Korea threatened to fire a ballistic missile towards the US territory of Guam.

The US, Japan and South Korea are seeking additional sanctions at the United Nations Security Council against North Korea in the wake of its H-bomb test.

The new type of missile would be able to reach any point in North Korea, and capable of carrying up to two tons of warheads, according to a military source.

In 2007, 51 percent of respondents said they expected a war, while 45 percent did not-also a much lower percentage than when the poll was first conducted, in 1992.

"The survey results show South Koreans have likely grown accustomed to its repeated threats of provocation after over 60 years in a ceasefire state", Gallup Korea said in a statement.

"Seoul also seeks to achieve North Korea's denuclearisation peacefully", Cho added.

U.S. President Donald Trump participates in a joint news conference in the East Room of the White House on September 7.

"The battery will be operational as soon as the USA finishes its internal procedures", South Korean defence ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun told reporters.

They have raised worries over rumored health hazards linked to the system's powerful radar and the possibility that the town will become a target of North Korean attacks.

He voiced hopes of a peaceful resolution using increased pressure and sanctions at a forum in Vladivostok, Russia, alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The North says it detonated a hydrogen bomb in its sixth nuclear test on Sunday.

Washington and Seoul began deploying THAAD before a conservative South Korean government was ousted in a corruption scandal.

A leading missile expert told Fox News the United States would have only minutes to decide whether to shoot down a North Korea missile.

The United States wants the Security Council to impose an oil embargo on North Korea, ban its exports of textiles and the hiring of North Korean laborers overseas, and to subject Kim Jong Un to an asset freeze and travel ban, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters on Wednesday.
