Mattis on North Korea: 'We Have Many Military Options'

South Korea's Meteorological Administration shows seismic activity from North Korea following the test

"Any threat to the United States or its territorities including Guam, or our allies, will be met with a massive response, a response both effective and overwhelming", Sec.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, standing in front of the White House this afternoon after the latest and largest nuclear test carried out by North Korea, said the United States has many military options for dealing with Kim Jong Un's provocations and that President Donald J. Trump wanted to be briefed on each one.

In response to Sunday's apparent nuclear test, the president posted a series of tweets condemning North Korea's actions and taking an indirect swipe at that nation's chief sponsor, China.

Trump's remarks came on Sunday after Pyongyang's announcement of a "perfect success" with its sixth and most powerful nuclear test to date. "But, as I said, we have many options to do so (denuclearization of the Korean peninsula)".

North Korea, in a broadcast on its state-run television network, confirmed it has successfully conducted tested a hydrogen bomb meant for intercontinental ballistic missiles, several media outlets reported Sunday.

Mattis said Washington was not looking for the "total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea".

The Chinese Foreign Ministry released a statement urging North Korea "to face up to the firm will of the worldwide community on the denuclearization of the peninsula. stop taking wrong actions that exacerbate the situation and are not in its own interest, and return to the track of resolving the issue through dialogue".

China's full response to the nuclear test, which it "strongly opposed", will depend on the forthcoming debate in the United Nations Security Council, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the U.N. Security Council set up an emergency meeting for Monday at the request of the U.S., Japan, France, Britain and South Korea.

The range to the simulated targets was set "in consideration of the North's Punggye-ri nuclear test site in its northeastern province".

"The president has made clear he'll consider everything". The first hydrogen bomb tested by the United States in November 1952 released the equivalent energy of 10,000 kilotons (or 10 megatons) of TNT.

He later added his administration is considering halting all trade with countries doing business with North Korea.

An H-bomb, also known as a thermonuclear device, would be immeasurably more destructive.

Bruce Bennett, a senior researcher at the RAND Corporation who specializes in North Korea, said letting Pyongyang develop a working nuclear-tipped missile leaves the U.S. open to a kind of nuclear blackmail.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called North Korea an "evil" regime and reiterated his demand that China cut North Korea's oil supply.

"If you put in enough money and starve your people you can build things like this", he said.

As he left a prayer service for Houston flood victims in Washington on Sunday morning, he was asked whether the United States would attack North Korea, responding: "We'll see".

The US is preparing new sanctions to further isolate North Korea, including actions against its trading partners, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.
