'Second Largest Black Hole' in the Milky Way Galaxy Found

Long-rumored midsized black hole may be hiding out in the Milky Way

With an estimated mass of around 100,000 times that of our sun, they believe it could be a special type of black hole that has always been hypothesized but never officially identified.

It's believed they could be the seeds of their more massive counterparts - merging together to form a huge one. intermediate black holes might simply turn out to be their progenitors.

Professor Tomoharu Oka and colleagues used computer simulations to show the high velocity motion, or kinematics, of the gas could only be explained by an intermediate black hole concealed in its midst.

A powerful telescope in the Chilean desert helped discover the new black hole. But researchers are divided over whether these are really midsized black holes, shining bright as they imbibe lots of surrounding gas, or smaller ones ingesting at a superfast rate. "We know very little about how black holes form".

But if this is the case, then how did the black hole form, and how did it get to the near-center of the galaxy? However, until now no definitive evidence has existed for intermediate-mass black holes that could indicate a middle step between the small and massive black holes already detected.

Astronomers detect the presence of a potential #black hole in our Galaxy.

He said: 'One possible scenario is intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) - which are formed by the runaway coalescence of stars in young compact star clusters - merge at the centre of a galaxy to form a supermassive black hole.

There is a massive black hole near the center of the Milky Way galaxy, hiding inside a giant cloud of molecular gas, scientists believe. The properties exhibited by the molecular cloud are being associated to gravitational kicks that are caused by invisible compact objects that usually weigh about 105, 000 solar masses.

Prof Oka, of Keio University in Japan said it is widely accepted black holes with masses greater than a million solar masses lurk at the centres of massive galaxies, but their origins remain unknown. Additionally, the lack of any counterparts at other wavelengths at all suggests that it's an inactive IMBH that isn't now consuming any more matter or growing.

The existence of a new Milky Way black hole was first hinted at a year ago by the researchers in a separate study. That growth should happen in part by mergers with other black holes and in part by accretion of material from the part of the galaxy that surrounds the black hole.

Astronomers have just found evidence that shows a long-rumored black hole might be present in the Milky Way.

They conclude their paper by saying that such a discovery would make a considerable contribution to the progress of modern physics.
