Unions won't hold flag in Cleveland Browns' opening game ceremony

Cleveland Browns players kneel during a recent anthem. More

Loomis said union members were angered when they learned that Browns management knew about the protest before the game but did not stop it.

At halftime of the Browns' game against the Giants on August 21, when the pregame kneeling took place, the Browns explained that while they feel their players should honor the anthem, the organization makes personal freedom a priority. Also galling: the fact that players are kneeling and not sitting exactly because Colin Kaepernick, who began the peaceful protest last season, wanted to make note of said sacrifices.

However, a police spokeswoman noted that the union "does not speak" for the department. public information officer Jennifer Ciaccia told HuffPost.

The president of the Cleveland Association of Rescue Employees Local 1975 said Saturday the protest has upset union members. The Cleveland Browns Organization has been a longtime partner of the Cleveland Division of Police, donating and assisting (many times quietly) to our Police Athletic League and hosting events with kids in the city's Muny League Football.

More importantly, we as Cleveland Police Officers strive to open the lines of communication with all of our citizens-athletes and enthusiastic Browns fans alike. We are CLEVELAND! And we stay strong together. We want to talk.

As reported previously by The Root, on August 21, a dozen Browns players knelt or stood in a circle of solidarity during a preseason game against the New York Giants, including, for the first time, a white player.

Members of the union had been scheduled to help hold the American flag before the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, along with military members and other law enforcement officers. Moreover, he blames Browns management for the protest taking place in the first place, insisting that they permitted it. We decided we will not support the hypocrisy of the Browns management and some of its obviously oppressed millionaire players. "And I think for all those guys that knelt initially and then last week chose to stand - I won't get into why they made that decision - I think they are going about it in a very responsible and thoughtful way".

Loomis was furious that Browns managers had known ahead of time about the protest and still allowed it to move forward.
