Carreno Busta ends teenager Shapovalov's run at US Open

Shapovalov’s dream run continues Sunday against Pablo Carreño Busta of Spain

Stepping into the court to take the Spaniard's time away, Shapovalov drew a netted backhand for the first break and 4-2.

However, the qualifier's dream was ended by wily Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta, eight years his senior, in three tiebreak sets, 7-6, (7/2), 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/3). From deuce in the opening game, Shapovalov won twelve straight points to take a 3-0, 0-30 lead.

After building a 5-2 lead in the first set, unforced errors and a struggling forehand started to slow down Shapovalov with Carreno Busta tying the set 5-5.

Carreno Busta, who will play in his second quarter-final of the year at a major, will next face either 29th-seeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman or 16th-seeded Lucas Pouille of France.

"It's awesome", Carreno Busta said in his on-court post-match interview with ESPN's Darren Cahill. In Montreal I watched him playing against Rafa [Nadal], and he made unbelievable match. "I can't describe it". "Hopefully I can come back here for many more years and just try to do some damage".

"I'm just playing every match with the belief I have within myself", he said. "I think that helps me in the matches". However, Shapovalov mounted one last stand, drawing errors on the first two break points before saving the third with a textbook serve and volley to hold. "But the biggest lesson is that I'm able to compete with these guys".

"You know, at the end of the day, it's tennis". I have a lot of work to do.

Carreno Busta lately has been warming up to his own impressive possibilities. "In the first round and second round as well, they are helping me a lot". I played previous year the final in doubles, but in singles this is my first time there. For Shapovalov, the win was just the continuation of a "life-changing month for him". And then at the beginning I was a little bit scared, maybe a little bit nervous.

"But after, when he broke me, I talk to my coach".

The No. 12 seed won 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) to reach the quarters for the first time in Flushing Meadows and match his best result in a Grand Slam tournament.

"It was just too tough with the kids and she didn't want to feel like she was betraying her students, which I completely understand". I continue fighting all the times with 5-2 in the first set, with 6-5, 15-40 in the first set.

"They may believe that they can succeed in tennis, then, that as we are a country insane about ice hockey, people say: "I'm going to put my children in hockey, they can succeed", because there have been so many great players like Wayne Gretzky, Sydney Crosby or Connor McDavid", he continued.

Carreno Busta is the highest-seeded player left on their side of the draw. "Both players are really good".

The Spaniard roared ahead 4-1 in the tie-break and Shapovalov dropped three of the last four points to fall two sets down. That the Canadian has improved his ranking such that qualifiers will no longer be necessary for Grand Slams bodes well for his future success in the big-time tournaments.

The Canadian began the summer swing ranked 161 in the world, he'll end it close to the top 50 in the world.

Denis Shapovalov's magical run at the US Open ended Sunday, but the engaging Canadian teenager with the unruly blonde hair and back-to-front black baseball cap vowed to return to NY and "cause some damage".
