Rohingya refugees flee Myanmar

Erdogan urges UN to put pressure on Myanmar government

Worldwide human rights organizations have condemned the violence.

The Rohingyas, who fled to India after violence in the Western Rakhine State of Myanmar, have settled in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan. Thousands of people have been the victims of these clashes in recent years.

Omar said 64 young Rohingya men had enlisted in his unit over a two-day period, walking from squalid camps in Bangladesh to join the fight.

Myanmar accused the Rohingya insurgents of torching seven villages, one outpost, and two parts of Maungdaw town.

Some Buddhists and Hindus have also fled the violence.

As well as Hindus, thousands of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and other local ethnic groups have also been displaced - the apparent targets of militants who are fighting under the banner of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA).

On behalf of the Bangladesh people, President Hamid greeted the Turkish president and people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha and thanked Erdogan for making the telephone call and extending his support for Bangladesh.

Thousands of Rohingyas are fleeing to Bangladesh with Myanmar law enforcers conducting a "clearing operation".

More than 400 Hindus from Rakhine have also crossed into Bangladesh, a community leader there told AFP, after armed men attacked their village, killing and looting.

An aid worker with an worldwide agency in Bangladesh reports: "What we're seeing is that many Rohingya people are sick".

Despite the fact that the vast majority of Rohingya families have called Rakhine home for generations, the government views them as "Bengali" interlopers from across the border. The bodies of nine more children and eight women lie alongside.

The UNHCR India had also called out to the government over its inhumane step and also reminded it that even if the country is not a signatory to the Refugee convention, yet as per the principle of non-refoulement-not sending refugees to a place where they fear persecution-it can not send Rohingyas back to Myanmar.

Between 300,000 and 500,000 Rohingyas live in Bangladesh but only about 32,000 of them have refugee status and live in camps in the Cox's Bazar district.

Why are Rohingya refugees stranded in no-man's land?

The Naf river is narrow in some places, but the Rohingya are increasingly crossing where the river is wider, or even venturing out to sea, after Bangladeshi authorities intensified border patrols.

"People are traumatised", said Sanjukta Sahany of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). He said the bodies of 15 children and 11 women were recovered, and it was unclear whether anyone was still missing.

"They are all exhausted after walking for days to reach Bangladesh, often with no food and just the clothes on their backs". Instead, Rijiju lashed out at human rights groups and told them not to "demonise" India. "Rohingya villages are being razed in Rakhine state as the Myanmar government steps up nationalist rhetoric", writes Al Jazeera, which says the Burmese military is "systematically going from village to village, looting and destroying everything".
