Federer And Nadal Battle Through

Roger Federer makes honest admission about his chances at the US Open

The Swiss 19-time grand slam victor needed 2hr 37min to down Tiafoe 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 to set up a second round meeting with either Slovenian Blaz Kavcic or Russian Mikhail Youzhny.

After breezing through the first set 6-1, Federer dropped the second in a tie-breaker (7-3) and the third set 6-4 to be one set away from elimination. He'd lose another set on the way to eventual victory, with the rest of the match playing out like this: 6-2, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.

Rafa Nadal and Karolina Pliskova will look to remain on cruise control as the two world number ones chase a place in the third round of the U.S. Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday.

Federer beat Frances Tiafoe 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 6-4 but only after struggling with his movement in the early stages and then letting the American teenager back into the match.

"I was definitely also lucky to play tonight because the rain".

The Swiss third seed goes on to face Spanish 31st seed Feliciano Lopez in round three at Flushing Meadows.

Federer, the eloquent mover he is, didn't appear to be struggling physically following his back problem in Cincinnati early this month.

"I think my style of the game is just to play aggressive, to try to play my rhythm because I have quite, I think in my opinion, quite well rhythm, that I can play, compete with many good guys", Rublev said after upsetting Dimitrov. Since Montreal, the focus has been more on the back, making sure I can play the tournament rather than being well-prepared.

The No.3-seeded Federer won five successive US Open championships from 2004-08 and also was the runner-up twice, including two years ago.

The Russian broke Federer for the first time to go 2-0 ahead at the start of the second set, however the Swiss then won five of the next six games, allowing him to serve for the set.

"I feel quite warmed up now", he added with a laugh.

"I haven't played a lot of guys with cramps in the last decade so it was somewhat new", said Federer. "So clearly I'm happy how I felt after the first round, because that was the scary bit. That was good. But because of the preparation being not the best that I've had, I was quite up and down". "I believe this will give me a lot of confidence with my body and my game". With a bit of fatigue, that's okay. "I think we both enjoyed ourselves out here tonight and you guys [the crowd] made it very special for us to keep fighting so I'm very happy with the match". I've done that hundreds of times.

There was better news for two other top-10 names, with sixth seed Dominic Thiem defeating young American Taylor Fritz 6-4 6-4 4-6 7-5 while ninth seed David Goffin battled to a five-set win over Guido Pella.
