Caixin China manufacturing PMI for August is 51.6, topping expectations

Dollar up in Asia with China manufacturing top data bill

The Nikkei India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rebounded to 51.2 in August from a low of 47.9 in the previous month, indicating a substantial turnaround from July's GST-related contraction.

"August's PMI results showed that manufacturers in India recovered quickly from the sharp slump that followed the introduction of the GST", said Pollyanna De Lima, Principal Economist at IHS Markit and author of the monthly PMI report.

Individually, new business surged at the quickest pace in more than three years, riding a wave of foreign demand.

Britain's manufacturers saw growth surge in August as new orders from both the United States of America and Europe flooded into the country and supported the sector, according to the latest PMI reading from IHS Markit.

"Today's data confirm that United Kingdom manufacturers are looking beyond the Brexit negotiations to strengthening market opportunities in Europe and beyond, with the acceleration in manufacturing activity in August helping to provide some welcome offset to sluggish consumer demand at home", added Ms Lee Hopley, chief economist at EEF, the manufacturers' organisation.

A separate index measuring non-manufacturing activity fell for a second month, slipping to 53.4 from 54.5 previously, reflecting slowing momentum in China's services sector. Still, the domestic market was the prime source of new contract wins for the manufacturing sector, despite robust demand from mainland Europe, the US, China and Australia. Business conditions improved across the three main subsectors - consumer, intermediate and investment goods - and at smaller and large-scale producers alike.

However, stricter environmental policies were a key factor leading to longer delivery times, whilst inflationary pressures intensified as input costs and output charges both rose at faster rates. On the other side, selling prices rose as higher client demand increased manufacturers' pricing power. Consequently, output prices rose at a solid pace that was the fastest in 2017 to date.
