Controversial Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke has resigned, the Milwaukee County Clerk told CBS affiliate WDJT.

Clarke's most recent Twitter post from Thursday afternoon showed him posing with law enforcement officers at the National Fraternal Order of Police convention in Nashville.

"Pursuant to Wisconsin Statute 17.01, this communication is submitted as the notice of my resignation as Sheriff of Milwaukee County commencing August 31, 2017, at 11:59 p.m.", Clarke's resignation letter said, according to the Journal-Sentinel.

In an email to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Clarke said that "only someone with a political agenda would say this is plagiarism".

Clarke announced in May that he had accepted a job with the Trump Administration, in the Department of Homeland Security. Clarke said in response that he'd withdrawn his name from consideration. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, but he repeatedly rejected their overtures.

He rose to national prominence as a fierce critic of the Black Lives Matter movement with his charged conservative rhetoric. The investigation stems from an incident at the Milwaukee airport, where Clarke ordered on-duty deputies to come shake down a fellow passenger who had stared him down and expressed distaste for the radical conservative sheriff.

Clarke's spokeswoman did not immediately respond to telephone messages and emails seeking comment.

He was hit by allegations in May that he plagiarized content in his master's thesis on homeland security, which he denied.

In May, Clarke said he had been offered a top spot at DHS - a statement that the department declined to confirm after an inquest recommended criminal charges against seven county jail staffers in the dehydration death of an inmate who went without water for seven days.
