Cuomo deploys emergency personnel to help with hurricane recovery

Debris is scattered from Hurricane Harvey Saturday Aug. 26 2017 in Katy Texas

"When families across Texas need shelter, disaster relief and comfort, Red Cross volunteers are there to help them", said Amy Grace, Executive Director of the American Red Cross serving the Heart of Texas.

They're going to load up between 4 to 6 trailers full of supplies, including water, snacks, first aid supplies and other basics.

As of Sunday afternoon, the storm killed at least five people, injured dozens, destroyed homes and businesses and left more than a million without power.

Keith Morin, a Tucson area Red Cross volunteer is heading to Texas to help people affected by Hurricane Harvey. In addition, 7 members of the Red Cross Disaster Assistance Response Team left NY for Texas on Sunday to support the Red Cross response to Hurricane Harvey. Most deployed overnight and many more are on standby to leave.

Baylor University does not expect any disruption to campus operations this weekend from inclement weather due to the effects of Hurricane Harvey.

After making landfall Friday night, Hurricane Harvey has settled over the Texas Gulf coast where it is dropping an unprecedented and catastrophic amount of rainfall.

"Each of the volunteers have different skill sets", Tobin said, adding there are mental health professionals, logistics people and those specializing in mass food preparation.

Nathan DeVault with the American Red Cross National Capital Region said about 18 volunteers have been deployed to either Texas or Louisiana. You can also make a $10 donation by texting "REDCROSS" to 90999.

"Our prayers are with Texas", said Phoenix Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner. Included in their massive 60,000-pound equipment cache are devices that will allow crew members to break into steel or reinforced concrete buildings and structures, as well as listening devices and cameras for finding people needing rescue.

The Red Cross depends on financial donations to be able to provide disaster relief immediately.
