Russian ambassador to Sudan reportedly found dead in swimming pool

Russian ambassador is 4th to die since January

Russian ambassador to Sudan Migayas Shirinsky died in Khartoum, the Russian Foreign Ministry's information department told TASS.

Shirinsky, who was in his 60s, died in his swimming pool at the ambassador's residence in northern Khartoum. The Russian Foreign Ministry has verified the news.

Though there is no apparent evidence to suggest his death is suspicious, Shirinsky is the fourth Russian emissary to die prematurely while overseas on assignment since the start of 2017.

The diplomat died while swimming in the pool of his residence, according to state broadcaster Russian Federation 24. Sudanese police have reportedly ruled that his death was not the result of an assassination attempt.

Sergei Konyashin, the press secretary of the embassy in Sudan, told Rossiya'24 news channel the embassy staff had found Shirinsky with the manifestations of a heart attack.

"We grieve to announce that on August 23 in Khartoum the Russian ambassador to Sudan, M Shirinsky, died", it said.

The diplomat, who was 62 years old, appeared to have symptoms consistent with a serious heart seizure, Konyashin said, adding that doctors were immediately called to the scene, but were unable to save his life.

Sudanese police said a preliminary investigation indicated Mirgayas Shirinsky had died of natural causes.

Before taking his post in Sudan, Shirinskiy served at the Russian embassies in Egypt, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Rwanda. Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov and senior diplomat Petr Polshikov were both shot dead on the same day on 20 December in Ankara and Moscow respectively.

State news broadcaster Russian Federation 24 reports that Skirinskiy, born in 1954 and appointed to his position in 2013, died while swimming in his pool.
