Chelsea: Wembley win proves that the Champions can retain their title

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will hope his side get their first win against Tottenham Hotspur. Catch live score and live commentary of Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Premier League game here

But Pochettino brushed off the notion of a "Wembley curse", insisting his team played better than Chelsea on Sunday despite the new surroundings.

Spurs looked to be heading towards a point, but Alonso popped up with another goal to give Chelsea all three points, leaving many with questions over Tottenham's impending fortunes at Wembley Stadium. The brace from the Spanish Blue ended Spurs' 19-game home Premier League unbeaten run and reiterated why they've taken a risk in swapping White Hart Lane for Wembley as their new stadium is completed.

While Conte revelled in the atmosphere, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino refused to believe Wembley was a factor in the loss.

After the game, star striker Harry Kane took to Twitter to send a message to Tottenham fans, summing up the mood by stating that Sunday's game was "very frustrating" for Spurs.

Tottenham will rue losing on their Wembley bow to a Chelsea side missing their title-winning spine, says Jamie Redknapp.

Alonso scored the victor two minutes from time after Spurs had levelled with eight minutes remaining through an own goal by Michy Batshuayi.

Under pressure following a disastrous opening week to the season, however, Chelsea battled until the final whistle and Alonso was able to score his second on the end of Pedro's pass. The Chelsea game, everyone can agree, could have gone the other way easily. "At most clubs now everyone waits until the last minute to see who they can get and who is the best deal - and it is understandable".

"We dominated and we were better but if you are not clinical, you can lose like today".

Spurs have now lost seven of their past 10 games at Wembley.

Alvaro Morata, making his first start for Chelsea, missed a glaring header in the opening minutes but came closer with a deflected strike in the second half.

He said: "It doesn't affect me".

"We are working hard, there are plenty of games to play".

When asked if the larger pitch dimensions at Wembley affected his team, Pochettino said: "Please, we need to stop".

"Next week we play at home against Everton, who are doing well". We will see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

Premier League clubs are due to vote on the suggestion next month and, if the plan is agreed, this could be the last summer when England's top-flight clubs can continue to buy players up until the end of August. It wasn't our day, we've got to move on and try to win our next game [against Burnley].

"Physically we dug very deep". Tottenham are a really strong team and they showed they can be a great team.
