'US Not Closer to War with N. Korea Than a Week Ago'

Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo and Army Lieutenant General HR McMaster, Donald Trump's national security adviser, said the USA can no longer stand by as North Korea develops nuclear missiles.

Although the United States has run out of "strategic patience" with North Korea's nuclear ambitions, a nuclear confrontation is not imminent, CIA Director Mike Pompeo said on Sunday.

But McMaster stressed the USA military is "locked and loaded" in case it needs to be called into action.

"There's nothing imminent today", Pompeo told Fox News on Sunday.

Trump has pushed China to pressure North Korea to halt a nuclear weapons program that is nearing the capability of targeting the United States. "No intelligence that would indicate we are in that place today".

North Korean officials in turn have accused the USA leader of driving the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war.

In the past few months, multiple illegal North Korean ballistic-missile and ICBM tests-coupled with the most recent bellicose language from Pyongyang about striking the U.S., Guam, our allies and our interests in the Asia-Pacific region-have escalated tensions between North Korea and America to levels not experienced since the Korean War. Beijing is North Korea's biggest economic partner and source of aid. "We're taking all possible actions short of military action, to resolve this very grave threat to the United States and the world".

Clapper said on CNN that the rhetoric was having a destabilizing affect and could cause North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to decide to lash out.

He added, "That's exactly the policy of the Trump administration". This amid concerns, that the president's fiery rhetoric last week, may have worsened an already volatile situation between the US and North Korea.

Pompeo said North Korea is getting closer to developing a nuclear weapon that could threaten the American people, and he noted that "previous administrations" have done nothing about it.

But Trump on Friday appeared to set another red line - the mere utterance of threats - that would trigger a US attack against North Korea and "big, big trouble" for Kim.

President Trump has taken a harsher stance against North Korea than his predecessor, Barack Obama, while Pyongyang has carried on ignoring sanctions and UN Security Council rulings against its nuclear weapons program.

"President Trump inherited a mess", Graham said.
