Saudi forces deployed in Yemen's port of Aden amid friction

A Saudi Arabia-led military coalition was responsible for an "unacceptably high" 51 percent of child deaths and injuries in Yemen a year ago, according to a draft United Nations report seen by Reuters on Thursday.

More than 8,300 people have been killed and 44,000 wounded since the Saudi-led coalition entered the Yemen war in 2015.

It said almost three-quarters of air strikes on schools, 38, and hospitals, 52, were carried out by the Saudi-led alliance.

Warning about escalating suffering in Yemen's man-made catastrophe, senior United Nations officials on Friday addressed the Security Council, calling on the worldwide community to push for a political solution to the more than two-year-old conflict.

Last year Saudi Arabia was initially included in the list but Ban Ki Moon, then secretary-general, backtracked after it threatened to stop funding. It encourages the inclusion of the coalition on the blacklist of nations that kill and maim children in war. Each of the United States and Saudi Arabia have accused Houthi militias of receiving Iranian funds and arms.

The report, obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, said the United Nations verified 1,340 casualties and attributed 683 — representing 51 percent — to attacks carried out by the coalition.

Last year, the United Nations capitulated to Saudi Arabia's demands and took the country out of its annual report on children and armed conflict.

"It is simply wrong to insist these cargoes go to Aden, not Hodeidah", O'Brien told the U.N. Security Council, appealing for countries to back a U.N. mechanism that started inspecting commercial shipments to rebel-held ports in May past year.

A Saudi military force has been deployed to Yemen's southern city of Aden to secure a number of strategic sites in the city, which now serves as the interim headquarters of Yemen's internationally recognized government, Anadolu Agency reports.

Haq said Guterres is scheduled to meet Gamba on Friday but the report isn't expected to be completed for another month. This not only includes the Houthis concentrated in the north but also the southerners who live in the territory the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (aka South Yemen) governed from 1967-1990.
