No war on Korean peninsula: South Korean President Moon Jae

Korea tensions ease slightly as US officials play down war risks

The United States - which backed Seoul in the war against the Chinese and Soviet-backed North - maintains about 28,500 servicemembers in South Korea.

"There's no military solution, forget it", Bannon told The American Prospect. "The alternative would have been both catastrophic and unacceptable!" "North Korea is nearing the red line", he said without elaborating on the consequences of crossing it.

People march during a rally calling for peace on the peninsula in central Seoul, South Korea, on Aug 15, 2017. "But we don't need to be impatient", Moon said. President Moon's statement on North Korea can thus be interpreted as a cautionary response to the situation.

Mr Trump tweeted on Wednesday that Kim Jong Un had: "made a very wise and well-reasoned decision", amid indications that he does not immediately plan to fire multiple missiles toward Guam. Asked about potential unilateral USA action, he said "that's purely speculative and a decision to do that would be by the president". "At the present stage, the worldwide community agrees that we need to prevent any further provocations, which is why the UN Security Council recently passed the strongest ever sanctions against North Korea with a unanimous vote", President Moon stated.

"Also, even if the United States takes military action outside the peninsula, I am confident it will sufficiently consult with South Korea in advance if such action may increase tension between the South and the North", he said.

The official daily Rodong Sinmun criticized the South Korean leader, who in a Tuesday speech asserted that Seoul's "big challenge at present" is an "issue of the north's nukes and missile".

Mr Trump's recent aggressive comments about deploying possible military options underscored his resolve to counter the threat from the North's nuclear weapons and missile programmes.

"At the same time, it is seeking its own sanctions, and I believe President Trump sought to pressure North Korea by showing a firm determination".

However, the US' top military official, General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in Beijing: "Any military action taken on the Korean peninsula would be in consultation with our allies".

Next week's start of annual U.S.

Moon, who took office in early May, held a summit meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in late June, reaching an agreement that South Korea would become a dominant player in addressing the peninsula issues. It also conducted two underground nuclear tests in 2016.

"If North Korea completes development of intercontinental ballistic missiles and weaponizes it with nuclear warheads, I will consider that a red line", Moon said.
