Plano Confirms 2nd Human West Nile Case of 2017

West Nile

The State Veterinarian's office has confirmed Delaware's 2017's first case of West Nile Virus in a horse.

Officials say the man did not need to be hospitalized and Clermont County Public Health will conduct an environmental assessment of the area.

A chicken in Merced County has tested positive for St. Louis encephalitis virus for the first time in decades, the mosquito abatement district reported.

The latest results, show 11 pool samples testing positive for the virus with one human case in Allen Parish.

Dr. Philip Armstrong, who is a medical entomologist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, said there has been "increases in the number of mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus with expansion into several new locations throughout the state".

According to the Ohio Department of Health, 17 Ohioans became infected with West Nile in 2016. However, about one in five patients develop a fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.

People in those communities, especially the elderly, are being urged to take precautions when out at high-mosquito-activity periods, like dawn and dusk. Three people have died from West Nile virus.

West Nile Virus claimed the life of a horse in DE, for the first time since 2015.

Empty or remove water-holding containers, such as buckets, unused flower pots and bird baths.

Infected mosquitoes can transmit the virus to humans. WNV is especially unsafe to older people because it can cause brain inflammation and many other serious illnesses such as convulsions or paralysis. Use insect repellent and dress in long sleeves, trousers and socks.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water.

Check your window and door screens to make sure there are no holes to allow mosquitoes in your home.

Use mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when outdoors.
