Lexington Mayor Jim Gray Proposes Moving Confederate Statues

Charlottesville: The history of the statue behind the white supremacist rally

Maryland's speaker of the House is calling for the removal of a Confederate statue of the Supreme Court justice who wrote a decision upholding slavery that sits on the front law of the statehouse.

Former mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's administration had discussed plans for altering the signage for two of the four statues and removing two of them altogether, but no action was taken before she left office past year.

The motion to remove a Confederate statue in one Virginia city was the shot heard round the world this weekend - and now, other American mayors are taking action.

The removal process was first initiated when former Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake commissioned a board of academics and officials to recommend what should be done with the monuments. Two Virginia State Police troopers were also killed in a helicopter crash near the protests, which were spurred by the planned removal of a 1924 statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Pugh told The Sun it's her intention to remove all four. But removing them now is a step in the right direction.

Scott's resolution contained a statement that said "Baltimore has had more than enough time to think on the issue".

Violent clashes occurred Saturday between white nationalists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville. "They are there as symbols of racial hatred and that's why we feel they should come down".

Lexington Mayor Jim Gray will ask the urban county council this week to petition the state to relocate two confederate monuments that stand in the heart of downtown. The Kentucky Military Heritage Commission must approve the plan after the Lexington City Council votes on it.
