Iran MPs boost missile funds in response to U.S. sanctions

Iranian and foreign leaders attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran's President Hasan Rouhani for his second term in office in Tehran on Aug. 5 2017

Head of the Federation Council's global affairs committee Konstantin Kosachev says the decision to increase financing of the missile program, adopted by the Iranian parliament, is a logical response to the USA tougher sanctions.

Iran's parliament speaker Ali Larijani said the bill was the country's "first action... to confront terrorist and adventurist actions by the United States in the region".

The bill would allocate about $260 million each to Iran's ballistic-missile program and the Quds Force, the external branch of the IRGC that is said to be active in Syria and Iraq. The parliament's majority voted for the bill, which was a response to the USA new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Washington's new sanctions violate a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran both "in letter and spirit".

After Larijani announced the vote results, lawmakers shouted: "Death to America".

In response the country's parliament has now given initial approval to a bill to increase spending on their missile programme.

It mandates the government to allocate an additional Dollars 260 million for the "development of the missile programme" and the same amount to the Revolutionary Guards' foreign operations wing, the Quds Force, state news agency IRNA said.

Mr Trump has recently backed away from his key campaign promise to withdraw from the nuclear agreement.

According to the bill, Iran's combined government and military apparatus is tasked with devising a comprehensive strategic plan to counter the "US threats" within a period of six months following ratification of the bill.

"The bill has very wisely tried not to violate the JCPOA (nuclear deal) and also give no chance to the other party to manipulate it", Araqchi said. "Iran boasts potential and actual options to confront hostile United States actions".
