Mayo Clinic Named Best Hospital In Nation For 2nd Time

Northwestern ranked Illinois' top hospital, according to US News

"To be included in the U.S. News rankings is well-deserved recognition, and to be ranked every year is really outstanding", Jean Robillard, UI vice president for medical affairs and dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine, said in a news release.

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center was ranked second-best hospital in California and first in the Los Angeles area.

UH also received rankings of high performing in eight Common Adult Procedure and Condition Ratings for patients 65 and older: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair; Aortic Valve Surgery; Heart Bypass Surgery; Heart Failure; Colon Cancer Surgery; Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD); Knee Replacement; and Lung Cancer Surgery.

Still, both have room for improvement. In the 16 specialty areas, 152 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center was ranked the seventh-best hospital in the country Tuesday by U.S. News and World Report, while Cedars-Sinai Medical Center placed 11th.

Nationally, the list was topped by the Mayo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins.

NJH - which is ranked together with its academic affiliate, University of Colorado Hospital, held the top spot in U.S. News' rankings of pulmonology programs for 15 years until it fell to No. 2 in 2013.

The annual Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 28th year, are part of U.S. News' patient portal, created to help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care for life-threatening conditions or for common elective procedures.

The measure is an improvement from a year ago, when CU ranked 20th in the country, and it marks the highest a Colorado hospital has ever scored in the overall rankings. It looks at more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties and nine procedures and conditions. Physicians are affiliated with the renowned Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, which is ranked among the highest in the nation in National Institutes of Health funding per investigator. “Rather, they are the result of the foresight, planning and dedicated efforts of thousands of employees who are committed to ensuring that the care we provide is world-class and who are focused on what is most important: the needs of our patients and their families.”. It ranked nationally in 11 specialties and was recognized as high-performing in seven procedures or conditions.

Otolaryngology, which includes everything from hearing loss to difficulty swallowing, is "a diverse specialty" and "a very competitive specialty", making the new ranking especially rewarding, he said.

The news magazine has published its 2017-2018 national, state and local rankings of "Best Hospitals" across the United States. "In other words, patients whose diagnosis may warrant referral to a hospital outside their community".

Two Pittsburgh hospitals are being recognized as among the best in America.

Orlando Health did not respond to an e-mail request for comment on Monday.

In addition to quality measures, U.S. News also rates hospitals based on reputation, which is one of the biggest criticisms of the report. Using the same data, U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings. Many times, the answer depends on the the type of care patients need.

"No firm conclusions can be reached about any unrated hospital", U.S. News says on its website.
