Patriots become first National Football League team to buy planes

Patriots became the first of likely many NFL teams to purchase their own team airplaines

These planes, depending on miles flown and condition, generally cost in the $10 million range.

The Patriots used to travel the same way as every other National Football League team, by flying via charter planes owned by other airline companies.

On the exterior of the aircraft's is a Patriots team logo and five Lombardi trophies on the tail.

The Patriots are ahead of the rest of the National Football League in a lot of ways, now they have one more - with their own fleet of jumbo jets.

During the offseason, the Pats purchased two 767 Boeing wide-body jets, making them the first National Football League team to purchase their own plane to fly to games, ESPN's Darren Rovell reported Tuesday. Rising charter costs flights means that teams can spend up to $4 million a year on flights.

One plane will be used as the main plane for the season, while the other will be the backup, with flight operations being run out of Providence, Rhode Island, sources said.

National Football League teams have 10 road games per season, including eight regular season road games. The planes reportedly come equipped with first-class seating throughout.

The Patriots will allow for the planes to be rented out during the season when they are not needed for team travel, sources said.

Per the report, the Patriots bought extended-range planes that can fly up to 12 hours nonstop. But what makes the planes special is the outside.
