Iran's Supreme Leader confirms Rowhani as president

NIAC Action Statement on President Trump Signing New Iran Sanctions Into Law

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, sworn in for a second term in front of an audience of foreign officials, reiterated on Saturday that his nation will stand by its obligations in an worldwide nuclear deal.

Hassan Rouhani was sworn in as Iran's President for a second term in a ceremony at the country's Parliament on Saturday.

Javdanfar said the new US sanctions on Iran signed by Trump into law on Wednesday, along with measures against Russian Federation and North Korea would likely deter foreign investors and so undermine Rouhani's efforts to boost the economy.

Mogherini has been a leading stalwart of the nuclear deal reached between Iran and six world powers in July 2015.

Rouhani will be formally sworn into office in parliament, on Saturday.

Addressing religious, military and political leaders, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's top authority, prayed for "the success of a worthy person".

The inauguration drew an estimated 130 high-ranking global guests, according to Iran's state TV. "The world should know that any abrogation pertaining to the agreement would face the unanimous reaction of the nation and the government of Iran".

He told the high-ranking European Union official that the administration of US President Donald Trump was attempting to block the Islamic Republic from benefiting from the deal, which he said was a violation of the text of the agreement.

Iran had already said it would complain to the body that oversees the deal about the new measures, which were passed in Congress last week in response to an alleged missile development programme and human rights abuses.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed the bill envisioning tougher sanctions against Russia, Iran and the DPRK.

He also referred to terrorism as a common issue for all countries of the region and the world, saying: "Close, more serious cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan is essential for resolving issues such as terrorism".

In the May 19 polls, Rouhani clinched 23.5 million votes out of some 41 million ballots cast, beating out hardline rival Ebrahim Raisi, who secured 38.5 percent of the vote. Iran prefers peace but is always ready to protect its people, Rouhani noted adding that the people's voice and not weapons was the main instrument of defense. French company Total defied U.S. pressure in July by signing a multibillion-dollar gas deal with Iran.

But among Iranians, the real attention was on who would be named to Rouhani's new cabinet.
