Leader asks new Rouhani govt

Rohani Sworn In For Second Term

Rouhani has vowed to open Iran up to global investment and trade, but the Islamic Republic insider who has held senior political and military posts since the 1979 Islamic revolution faces enormous challenges, including deepening political divisions among the country's ruling elite and President Donald Trump's aggressive Iran policy. Among those in attendance at the ceremony was former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who fell out of favour with the establishment and was notably barred from standing as a candidate.

The Leader made the suggestions after he authorized Rouhani as president for a second four-year term.

The law also imposed new sanctions on Russian Federation and North Korea.

Trump, who during his election campaign past year called 2015's nuclear agreement "the worst deal ever", signed new sanctions into law on Wednesday, along with measures against Russian Federation and North Korea.

An Iranian official said on Tuesday that the new United States sanctions break the terms of the nuclear deal.

"The main goal of the United States in implementing the sanctions against Iran is to destroy the JCPOA", Deputy Foreign Minister Sayed Abbas Araqchi said, referring to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the deal engineered between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, alongside Germany and the European Union.

At the start of the Trump Administration in January and February, US relations with Iran worsened after the Islamic Republic carried out ballistic missiles tests, and new US sanctions against Iran were announced.

"We will certainly not fall into the trap of United States policy and Trump, and our reaction will be very carefully considered".

The accord lifted the nuclear-related sanctions against Iran in exchange for certain restrictions on its nuclear activities.

Separately, on July 28, the Trump administration sanctioned six Iranian entities after Iran tested a space launching device.
