USA tests missile-defense system over Pacific Ocean

US conducts 'successful' THAAD missile test after latest North Korea missile launch

"In addition to successfully intercepting the target, the data collected will allow the Missile Defense Agency to enhance the THAAD weapon system", he said.

The Air Force launched a medium-range ballistic missile over the Pacific that was "detected, tracked and intercepted" by the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system located at a complex in Kodiak, Alaska, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency said in a statement.

THAAD is not created to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles, like the one North Korea tested for the second time Friday, but it is an excellent defensive tool when it comes to short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

The test, directed over the Pacific Ocean, comes in the midst of elevated strains with North Korea, which on Saturday said it had led its own fruitful trial of a long-run intercontinental ballistic rocket (ICBM) that demonstrated it has the ability to strike American's territory. After the recent launch of the North Korean leader Kim Jong UN said that the reach of the missiles were the United States mainland, and that sanctions pressure America encourages North Korea to develop nuclear weapons.

On July 4, a test showed the missile had enough range to reach Alaska.

In a statement, the Army said the exercise involved Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and South Korea's Hyunmoo Missile II.

A commander of the U.S. Pacific Air Forces said the U.S.is willing to use "rapid, lethal and overwhelming force" against North Korea if necessary.

North Korea said it tested a ballistic missile that can reach all of the United States.

North Korea said the "whole US mainland is within reach".

Authorities say the exercise was successful and will help the US stay ahead of the evolving threat.

Hours later, the USA then flew two B-1B bombers over the Korean peninsula in a show of force after the North Korean missile tests, the Air Force said in a statement on Sunday. South Korea had earlier deployed two such units but the rest were delayed due to environmental concerns.
