Homeland Security Secretary Says Ports A Terrorism Priority

H2-B Visa

A three-month-old ban on taking electronic devices such as laptops onto aircraft cabins on flights from Turkey to the United States was lifted at the start of July.

In March, the United States placed a ban on all electronics bigger than a smartphone on incoming flights to the USA from nine airlines: Egypt Air, Turkish Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Saudia Airlines, and Royal Jordanian Airlines, which operated from 10 airports.

A USA intelligence official told CBS News that the new ban was put in place because of an intelligence report that found a terrorist plot seeking to use explosives hidden in a laptop to destroy a commercial flight. Intelligence suggested that terrorists were developing bombs powerful enough to bring down an airplane but small enough to be hidden inside those devices.

Kelly said at a security conference that the TSA had tested two similar explosive devices concealed in large electronic devices. "To say the least, it destroyed the airplane".

TechCrunch notes that the USA first started lessening the restrictions earlier this month by lifting the ban from three airlines.

And Kelly says every single airport, including the 10 in the Middle East and North Africa subjected to the initial laptop ban, now meet those initial requirements to enhance security across the board.

Officials released a statement to CBS News saying communication between the DHS and Transportation Security Agency led to the increase in airline safety. Officials said the measures were aimed at ending a limited in-cabin ban on laptops that had targeted nine airlines, and preventing an expansion of that ban to additional airports in Europe and elsewhere.

The regulations could include asking passengers to present larger electronic devices for inspection and prove that they can be powered on.
