Gujarat Congress MLAs leave party, join BJP

BJP president Amit Shah is currently a Gujarat MLA

It is to be said that BJP has nominated party president Amit Shah from Gujarat and Union Minister Smriti Irani as Rajya Sabha candidate.

In a statement signed by five MLAs and AICC Media In-charge Randeep Surjewala, who rushed to Ahmedabad from Delhi, the Congress said: "Hunger for power has made the rulers blind to the extent that Congress MLAs are being offered a bribe of crores of rupees, election ticket and other allurements".

Three senior Gujarat Congress legislators on Thursday resigned from the party and joined the BJP in a huff, expressing their anger against the Congress for ignoring their aspirations.

Chhanabhai Chaudhary, a legislator from tribal Vansda seat, and Mansinh Chauhan from Balasinor submitted their resignations to Speaker Ramanlal Vora on Friday. The party has fielded Ahmed Patel, the political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, in the upcoming poll to the Upper House of Parliament. "The cross-voting in presidential poll revealed that Congress was losing its 11 MLAs". As the Congress members trooped into the Well and started shouting slogans, Naqvi took potshots at the main opposition party saying they would also demand a direction to the Surpreme Court as several of their members are involved in "corruption" cases. Congress, the main opposition party in the Gujarat Assembly, also has the support of two NCP legislators and the lone JD (U) MLA.

The Congress has alleged that the BJP is "stealing" its legislators, with Congress leader Renuka Choudhury claiming that her party's MLAs are being "threatened and coerced to switch sides" to help the BJP candidate win the Rajya Sabha election.

Within minutes of joining the BJP, Rajput was named the party's third Rajya Sabha candidate. "The BJP has nothing to do with it", he said.

Facing an alarming exodus on MLAs, the Congress party in Gujarat huddled on Friday to discuss their future strategy ahead of Rajya Sabha elections. Rajya Sabha is not the place to protest.

With Nitish Kumar-led Bihar in its kitty, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on a new high, and is said to be contemplating a far-far reaching reshuffle in the union government as also in the organizational machinery, so as to keep the party battle-fit for the 2019 elections.
