Israeli embassy in Jordan hit by deadly attack

A protest outside the Israeli Embassy in Amman

The Mossad chief at the time resigned and the two agents who carried out the failed plot were arrested and held in Jordan, but later freed.

The ministry says two Jordanian workmen entered the building to replace furniture. They were captured shortly after the attack. The second man killed was the building owner. The soldier was released from prison earlier this year, after serving 20 years.

The shooting incident came after angry demonstrations in Amman on Friday in support of the violent Palestinian campaign to oppose Israeli control over the Temple Mount and other holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem. The 37-acre walled compound is the third holiest site of Islam, after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

Jordan's ruling Hashemite dynasty, said to trace its ancestry back to Prophet Muhammad, draws much of its legitimacy from the role of protector of the site, which houses the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa mosques.

A source said that one of the two Jordanians stabbed the assistant of the Israeli embassy's security manager after a quarrel between them. "At 6 a.m. staff tried to leave, but they were stopped by security officials" who told them it was too unsafe to leave.

"The Israeli government is playing with fire and risking a major crisis with the Arab and Islamic world".

The incident further complicated efforts to resolve a spiraling crisis over Al-Aqsa mosque compound, East Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site.

Sunday's attack comes after two Israeli officers were killed by by three Israeli Arabs on July 14 at the Lion's Gate entrance to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

An Israeli embassy security guard shot dead a Jordanian who attacked him with a screwdriver at Israel's embassy compound in Amman and a second Jordanian also died, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said. However, it said on Monday that it had reached no decision, AP reported.

Six members of the embassy staff, who had been in a "safe room", were evacuated from the site by Egyptian commandos, following the personal intervention of United States President Barack Obama.
