Charlie Gard protesters plan rally as hospital reports 'death threats'

Staff at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London have received death threats in relation to the Charlie Gard case

The parents of terminally ill British baby Charlie Gard have ended their legal fight to transport him to the US for experimental treatment, concluding a months-long saga that has raised almost $1.75 million and elicited support from Pope Francis and President Trump.

Armstrong, speaking in London's High Court, said the parents had dropped their legal fight for Charlie to continue to receive treatment because scans showed that the child suffered irreversible damage.

The legal battle with Great Ormond Street Hospital has attracted huge media attention after the hospital argued for Charlie's life support to be turned off.

The parents broke into tears in the courtroom as their lawyer told the judge: "It is no longer in Charlie's best interest to pursue this course of treatment".

"For Charlie, it is too late ... treatment can not offer a chance of success", he told the court.

According to the BBC, Armstrong told the judge "that USA neurologist Dr. Michio Hirano had said he was no longer willing to offer the baby experimental therapy after he saw the results of a new MRI scan last week". "Rather, it confirms that while [proposed therapy] NBT may well assist others in the future, it cannot and could not have assisted Charlie", they said.

"The parents' worst nightmare have been confirmed", Mr Armstrong said.

On Monday, Mr Justice Francis had been scheduled to analyse what his parents said was fresh evidence at a hearing in the Family Division of the High Court.

"To Charlie we say mummy and daddy love you very much, we always have and we always will".

The case has drawn massive global interest including high-profile interventions from President Donald Trump and Pope Francis in support of the family.

Earlier this year, the London hospital treating him asked for permission to remove him from life support, calling it the most humane path forward.

The hospital said that it would now give "careful thought to what they can learn from this bruising court case that might enrich the care it provides to its most vulnerable patients and families".

Charlie's parents allegedly decided to forego treatment for their son Friday but chose not to publicize the decision until Monday.

The judge had scheduled a two-day hearing beginning Monday to consider fresh evidence after Dr. Michio Hirano, an American neurology expert from Columbia Medical Center in NY, came to London to examine the child.

Charlie Gard was born on August 4, 2016 in the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Chris Gard and Connie Yates had been fighting to take him to the United States for experimental treatment.

Mr Justice Francis paid tribute to the mother and father in court, telling them no one could comprehend their agony.

Yates and Gard have been fighting successive rulings saying their son's life support should be withdrawn and he should be left to die with dignity.
