Six killed in violence over Jerusalem holy site

Palestinian Muslim faithful pray next to Lions Gate a main entrance to the Al Aqsa mosque in the Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem's Old City

At least three Israelis dead in West Bank settlement of Neve Tsuf in knife attack, Israeli radio says.

Extra security measures were put in place at the complex - known as the Temple Mount by Jews and the Noble Sanctuary by Muslims - after three Arab Israelis attacked a patrol near Lion's Gate a week ago, killing two policemen.

Palestinians and Israeli forces clash outside the Old City.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cut off all official contacts with Israel over the detectors, and the measures have been condemned by majority-Muslim countries.

The occasion was the installation of metal detectors at Holy Muslim Temple mount that led to the outbreak of violence.

Mr Abbas made the announcement during a meeting late Friday with senior Palestinian officials to discuss the growing escalation over a major Jerusalem shrine.

In the first incident, an Israeli settler killed an 18-year-old Palestinian man in the Ras al-Amud neighbourhood in occupied East Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

After Israel reopened the mosque on Sunday Palestinians refused to enter Al-Aqsa through the detectors, with hundreds camping around the premises throughout the week to protest Israeli actions.

On Friday, Israeli authorities announced that Muslim men under 50 are barred from entering the compound. Apart from wounds from live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas, some victims said they were run over by Israeli armed forces vehicles.

At the conclusion of the Isha evening prayers, clashes erupted again with Israeli forces firing stun grenades at the crowd, Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett, who was reporting outside al-Aqsa, said. "We don't leave until they remove the metal detectors".

Under the post-1967 arrangements, Muslims administer the compound, while Jews can visit, but not pray there.

COGAT, the IDF branch which oversees the West Bank, said that the metal detectors could be removed "as long as the alternative ensures security and the prevention of the next attack".

Israel made a decision to install the metal detectors at the entry to the shrine on Sunday.
