Grassley may subpoena Trump Jr. to testify to Senate panel

White House under siege amid email fallout

The powerful committee chairman says he is sending the President's eldest son the request in a letter.

As reported in May, Special Counsel Bob Mueller is putting Manafort and former White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn under a microscope as part of his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The emails are the first documentary evidence that a top Trump associate took a meeting to hear damaging information about Clinton with the understanding that it was connected to a Russian government effort to help Trump in the 2016 election.

The chairman noted that the committee is holding hearings next week on the Federal Agent Registration Act, which requires Americans to register to work as lobbyists of foreign governments.

Donald Jr. accepted a meeting, along with Manafort, with a Russian lawyer claiming to have ties to the Russian government in June 2016.

Grassley has questions about whether Veselnitskaya should have been registered and whether the foreign agent act is being properly enforced.

President Trump says the woman is a private lawyer who has "roamed the hallways" of the US Congress.

"It is unclear how she was still in the country for that meeting, despite being denied a visa beforehand and her parole purportedly expiring on January 7, 2016", Grassley wrote, according to a statement and copy of the letter released Wednesday.

"It was in the previous administration [and] if there had been enforcement of the immigration laws, she wouldn't have been in the country", said Grassley.

From the secretaries, Grassley requested "all visa records and associated documentation" for Veselnitskaya.

Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley in Washington on September 20, 2016. "From what I've seen so far from meetings with Mr. Wray and from looking at his record, he appears to possess these qualifications".

However, Veselnitskaya was able to come into the United States, after requesting a meeting with Donald Trump Jr. through an intermediary promising damaging information on political opponent Hillary Clinton.

Graham said that the hearing will give Trump Jr. the opportunity to tell his side of the story and that "you'll have to watch the hearing to know what I am going to say".
