Parents of Sick British Baby Rally For Transfer to US Hospital

London hospital reviews ending baby's life support

The parents of terminally ill 11-month-old Charlie Gard said on Sunday their son "deserves a chance" to be taken to the USA for an experimental treatment that could improve his condition.

Charlie's parents, Chris Gard and Constance Yates, have been fighting to bring their son to the United States for an experimental treatment called nucleoside bypass therapy, which they believe could slow the progression of his disease, and even raised over £1.3 million on GoFundMe, but recently lost a battle in the European high court to gain the right to do so.

Supporters, some of whom had travelled from the USA, held banners and placards reading "Save Charlie Gard".

Last week New-York Presybterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center offered to admit Charlie and to provide him with experimental treatment, according to the Washington Post.

The intervention comes as more than 350,000 people signed a petition urging the baby's doctors to allow him to receive treatment overseas, and his family said the "fight is not over".

Meanwhile, Conservative Woman writer Caroline Farrow said the claims of Charlie's parents are "not fundamentally outrageous or unreasonable".

"We're not saying Great Ormond Street is a bad hospital but they don't have a specialist for his particular condition".

The couple were speaking after two United States congressmen said they would table legislation to give Charlie and his family USA resident status in a bid to allow them to travel there for experimental treatment.

Further unpublished medical information has been given to Great Ormond Street by doctors who feel the experimental treatment could help the child.

Monday's court hearing will determine whether or not Charlie Gard will get the experimental treatment in question or if his life support will be removed, as was ruled permissible on June 27.

The U.K. High Court agreed to give Gard's case a new trial in light of new evidence concerning nucleoside bypass therapy presented by two worldwide hospitals.

But it is believed the British court rulings banning Charlie from leaving Great Ormond Street Hospital can be overcome if the 11-month-old baby becomes an American.

Charlie Gard's life has been unusually tragic and genuinely heartbreaking, to say the least. Thank you again for your continued support.

One of the signatories of the letter is a researcher and neurologist with the Vatican-owned Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome, which offered to transfer Charlie to their facilities earlier this week.

Brett King, 54, accused GOSH doctors of making a "boardroom decision" on Charlie's case and told the paper: "There's no logic in refusing them".

The case is due to be heard at the High Court in London later on Monday.

"Not only that, but they said it would be futile and would prolong Charlie's suffering".

Charlie suffers from mitochondrial depletion syndrome, a rare genetic disease that has left him brain damaged and unable to breathe unaided.

He said a judge could make a different decision if there was "new and powerful" evidence. Previously doctors had indicated Charlie had irreversible brain damage.
