UK's foreign secretary backs doctors in Baby Charlie case

Battle for baby Charlie Gard’s life goes global as Trump requests to meet Theresa May

"It's an unimaginable position for anybody to be in", May told Parliament when asked about Charlie Gard, widely known as Baby Charlie, who suffers from a rare condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage.

As previously reported, Charlie's parents have raised more than $1.3 million to bring their son to the United States to undergo an experimental treatment.

A family spokesman said: "The White House has been in talks with Charlie's family, GOSH (Great Ormond Street Hospital), the UK Government, the Department of Health and the American doctor who wants to treat Charlie. The president is just trying to be helpful if at all possible", she said, calling the situation "heartbreaking".

The parents had said earlier that they expected doctors to end life support for their child last Friday.

President Trump waded into the argument on Monday, tweeting: "If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the United Kingdom and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so".

After Pope Francis and President Donald Trump spoke out in support of Charlie, the Vatican's Bambino Gesu Children's Hospital asked whether the child could be transferred to Rome to receive care.

Johnson expressed gratitude for the Italian offer but "explained that legal reasons prevented Britain from accepting it", the Italian Foreign Ministry said.

After Trump expressed his intention to help the family, an unnamed hospital in the USA reportedly offered to provide Charlie with a new experimental treatment at no cost if he is allowed to travel. A statement added: 'For them he prays, hoping that their desire to accompany and care for their own child to the end is not ignored'.

Specialists at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital decided that a therapy proposed by a US doctor for the infant was experimental and would not help, and that life support for the child should be stopped.

They said they felt "let down" by the legal decision.

Charlie's mum Connie said: "The support from the Pope and the President has given us hope".

"They believe in our case and understand why we believe it is right to continue fighting so hard to save Charlie".

There is a widespread and nearly visceral feeling at home and overseas that the law made a gross mistake in the tragic case of Charlie Gard.
