Photo adds to mystery of Earhart disappearance

Amelia Earhart May Have Survived Crash-Landing, Newly Discovered Photo Suggests

The newly-discovered photo reportedly shows Earhart sitting on a dock; a ship can be seen towing a barge with an airplane on the back.

Did Amelia Earhart, who famously vanished, actually survive a plane crash in the Pacific?

The Japanese controlled numerous islands in the South Pacific that she and Noonan were flying over on the last leg of their adventure.

The photo, which will be featured in in a new History channel special called "Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence", was discovered in the National Archives more than 80 years after her death. A man, pictured standing near her, looks like Earhart's navigator, Fred Noonan. History buff and retired federal agent Les Kinney says he found the "misfiled" photo in the National Archives, per People.

She was the first female to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.

She was flying at 1,230ft looking for Howland Island, south-west of Honolulu, but was low on fuel. Given the mysterious circumstances around the crash many have tried to pin their own theories of what happened to Earhart, including a recent attempt to prove she survived as a castaway by using bone-sniffing dogs.

Also, the more substantive evidence comes from the alleged Noonan appearance in the photo - showing a receding hairline and similar features, NBC News writes. It's always been believed her plane - a Lockheed Model 10-E Electra funded by Purdue University - went down near Howland Island in the central Pacific Ocean.

"It's my feeling that this is very convincing evidence that this is probably Noonan", facial recognition expert Ken Gibson said. They took off from New Guinea on July 2, 1937 and were never seen again.

The documentary runs at 9 p.m. ET July 9 on the History Channel. "The nose is very prominent", Gibson said.

Following robust search and rescue efforts, Earhart was officially declared dead in absentia January 5, 1939, and the mystery of her demise has remained unsolved ever since.

Based on the latest claimed evidence, the team of investigators for History Channel concluded that her plane was blown off course and crashed in the Marshall Islands.

"If in fact she was spying on the Japanese, the government may not have wanted the American public to know they put "America's sweetheart" in that situation and she was captured". "We don't know when".

The program also weighs in on the possibility that the USA government may have covered up the photo.

Kinney argues the photo must have been taken before 1943, as US air forces conducted more than 30 bombing runs on Jaluit in 1943-44.
