I Don't Want To Be PM, Congress Should Take Lead: Nitish Kumar

Ram Nath Kovind

"This is exactly what I mean when I say that mere opposition unity would not serve any objective unless there is an alterantive narrative". Mr. Kumar was emphatic that his party had been following the coalition dharma and would always follow it.

Nitish Kumar also downplayed his earlier comments holding the Congress responsible for the "current mess" in the opposition ranks.

The Congress's response was aimed at the stinging attacks from Nitish, who on Monday, accused it of pursuing a reactive agenda rather than presenting an alternative narrative against the Narendra Modi government. "There was a strong unity and a clear agenda, which gave us huge electoral success", said Nitish Kumar.

His reported observation came after senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had indirectly criticised Nitish Kumar for extending support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind. Not only this, all states of the country participated in the negotiations on GST rates and even Congress-led UPA had nurtured the GST idea for 10 years. Kumar also met former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) supremo H D Deve Gowda and sought his party's support to her candidature. "There is no point in asking me why I did not attend it, there was no invitation then, where is the question of attending or skipping?"

Accusing certain "political quarters" of exaggerating differences between the two parties, the Congress spokesperson said these issues were a outcome of differences over the Presidential elections.

Denying reports of differences with Congress, Bihar Chief Minsiter Nitish Kumar said that there are no issues between Congress and JDU.

Kumar's comments come at a time when questions have been raised on the continuity of the alliance after JD (U) chose to back NDA's presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind while the other members including the Congress and RJD backed the opposition's Meira Kumar, a former Lok Sabha speaker.

When asked why he did not attend the special midnight session of Parliament for the launch of the Goods and Services Tax, the Janata Dal (United) leader said he was not invited.

Taking a dig at the Congress and the RJD, the JD (U) leader said the opposition should not object to all government moves just for the sake of opposition unity.
