Burnley defender Keane set for Everton medical

Michael Keane

Everton are on the verge of signing Burnley defender Michael Keane with the player due for a medical on Merseyside on Monday, sources have told ESPN FC.

Everton broke their transfer record last month by signing England Under 21 goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from Sunderland in a deal that could rise to £30 million and the Keane transfer equals that.

The England worldwide defender has penned a five-year deal at Goodison Park.

Keane's expected arrival will not be the end of Everton's big spending, with manager Koeman determined to test Swansea City's resolve to keep 27-year-old Iceland midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Keane, who had a year left on his Turf Moor contract, had been linked to previous club Manchester United before Victor Lindelof's move from Benfica, with Liverpool also reportedly interested in signing the 24-year-old.

"I believe there is much more to come from Michael and that's what makes his signing really exciting for me - we will see his development as a player along with the progression overall within the club". He played in my position when he was a world-class player for a great Barcelona side and a great Dutch side and the style of football he likes to play will suit me, I believe. I'm only 24 which, for a centre-half in the Premier League, is relatively young.

Keane was a standout player for the Clarets in the Premier League last season and managed 35 starts.

As a reward for his fine form, Keane was called up to the senior England squad in October for two FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, and he earned his first cap in a friendly against Germany on March 22.

Everton have already signed Sunderland's England's Under-21 goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for up to £30m and brought in Ajax captain Davy Klaassen in a move worth nearly £24m.
